Original cabinet

When I bought this game is was a Ghosts 'n Goblins game in working order. I played it for a few days and then started to tear it apart. As I started to dismantle it I discovered that it was originally a Defender cabinet that was converted to Ghosts 'n Goblins some time ago. The original defender monitor bezel is still present as well as the original power transformer and monitor.

Here are some pics of the machine when I got it.....

Restoring the Cabinet
Empty Cabinet
The first thing I did was to totally dismantle the entire game. All small parts were placed in plastic bags so I would not loose anything and could remember where everything was supposed to go. Then I cleaned everything real good. The cabinet was really filthy inside so I swept it out real good. The paint on the cabinet was thick and crusty in places, so the next step was to strip off all the old paint.

Original Defender sideart
Original side Art

As I stripped off all the old crappy paint I found the original Defender side art under the first layer of paint! COOL! So I stripped off all I could of the top layer and tried to keep the original side art intact. But there was no way to save it because it was just too bad looking.

I then decided that I would try to repaint the Defender side art back on when I was done repainting the cabinet. So I got a huge roll of tracing paper and traced all the side art onto the paper so I could create a template to repaint it at a later date. I traced the red and yellow on two different sheets so I could paint the separately. Then I removed all the paint from the cabinet down to the wood.

Repairs

After the cabinet was completely stripped, I then patched all the holes and gouges with "plastic wood" I also repaired the cracked and splintered bottom of the cabinet and added more plastic wood to the bottom edges to even them out where the they were worn down.

I then sanded all surfaces with a random orbital sander working from grits 40 to 220.

Primed!!

When I was satisfied with the feel of the cabinet I swept it off real good with a shop vac and then wiped it down with a tac cloth to remove all particles from it.

Then I painted it with about 3 coats of wood primer.

Cabinet
I painted the cabinet with about 4 coats of black Semi-gloss Paint. I found an original Defender game marquee on Ebay that I got for $26.00 I purchased a new florescent light, ballast, and starter for the cabinet at the local Home Depot and installed them into the cabinet. The light is powered by the original game power supply.
